Country Assignments

Country Assignments will be posted November 5, 2010.

Although we try to accommodate all country requests, it is possible that your school may be assigned countries different from those selected on your registration form, or with fewer students than initially requested.  Please know that conference organizers did try to accommodate as many country requests as possible.

Please note: your country is only represented in the committees/organs that are marked with bullets (••). Each bullet represents one student (two per committee, where there is only one delegate per school). ). While we strongly recommend two students per committee, you may assign only one student if you feel they are adequately prepared for this role. Assigning more than two students to a committee is NOT permitted.

On rare occasions, a country’s committee spots were divided between two schools. Please note that each school is only assigned those committees indicated on the country matrix.

Please be aware that if your school registered for an odd number of delegates (for example: 15), you have most likely been assigned an even number of spots (in this example, 16), as each committee is two delegates per country for every committee. You have only been charged the number of delegate spots indicated on your registration form.

• Newer delegates may feel more comfortable in larger committees, as they cannot be singled out. Experienced delegates will most likely enjoy smaller committees where they will speak more often.
  
• Know your students’ resources and strengths when pairing them as partners. Try to ensure that at least one delegate has computer access. Also, Model UN is a great way for English language learners to become acclimated to the language; but pairing two English language learners may cause frustration for both delegates. Try pairing a student who has stronger verbal skills with a less verbal student. This is an equally good tip for monolingual students.
  
• Know your students’ individual traits. Has this student ever backed out of a prior commitment? If so, a small committee may not be the right place to assign him/her. What students do in class is a good indication of what they will do in committee. If s/he can work independently, a smaller committee may be the perfect place. But you might also pair him/her with a student who may back out. If his/her partner backs out, a responsible or experienced delegate might be prepared to work alone.

Please notify our office immediately if:

• Your school is dropping 6 spots or more, dropping a seat on the Security Council, or dropping a P-5 country (USA, UK, France, China, Russia). You are not required to inform UNA-USA if you are dropping fewer than 6 spots, though still responsible for paying for the full amount of spots you registered for. We have many schools on our Waiting List, and would appreciate the opportunity to offer them spots that your school will not be using.
  
• Your school cannot attend the conference.
  
• If a school fails to notify us when it drops its number dramatically or does not attend the conference, it will not be able to attend the conference next year.

Background guides for all committees and topics will be posted on our conference website at www.unausa.org/unausamun/committees under the “Committees and Topics” page. Please ensure that each of your students has a copy of their committee’s background guide to assist them with research and preparation for conference debate.

1. Assign your students to countries and committees.

2. Begin country, topic and committee research.

3. Print and make copies of the appropriate background guides.

4. Keep a copy of all background guides for your own records.

5. All final payments must be received at UNA-USA by March 11. Invoices will be sent to each school via e-mail in mid-January. Late payments will result in a $50 penalty fee. Payment information can be found here.

6. E-mail all position papers to the appropriate committee email address by April 29. Detailed directions for position paper submission is available here.

7. Download the Video and Photography Release Form and copy it for each of your students. These should be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to our office via mail, as a single package for each school, by April 29.

8. Submit the delegation confirmation form to UNA-USA by April 29.  This will be emailed to registered teachers in the early Spring.
