United Nations Association of the USA Chapters Across the Country Honor Womens’ Contributions to the WorldMore than 40 Events Nationwide Spotlight Local Communities as part of Global CelebrationMarch 8, 2012 WASHINGTON – Hundreds will gather this week at United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) events across the country honoring women’s political, economic, and social contributions to the world on the occasion of International Women’s Day. More than 40 UNA-USA Chapters from coast to coast will host film screenings, lectures, dinners, and other events to commemorate the day. “International Women’s Day allows us to step back and recognize how women and girls inspire us all, and help us to live better lives every day,” said UNA-USA Executive Director Patrick Madden. “The network of local UNA-USA Chapter events shows how the work of women has helped advance communities in America and abroad, while recognizing the world still has a long way to go in supporting women and girls in areas such as health, equality, and human rights.”
Prominent leaders on women’s issues from UNA-USA Chapters and the UN Foundation will speak at several of these events. UN Foundation President Timothy E. Wirth will headline the Dallas Chapter of UNA-USA’s Peace Patron Luncheon, which is co-hosted with Peacemaker’s Inc., a local nonprofit organization.
UNA-USA International Women’s Day events exemplify the support of the organization – and Americans generally – for the work of the United Nations. The UN has made women’s issues a top priority through such objectives and initiatives as: the Millennium Development Goals focusing on gender equality and maternal health; UN Women; and Every Woman Every Child.
UNA-USA is a program of the UN Foundation, furthering its mission to connect people, ideas, and resources to help the UN solve global problems.
