United Nations Association of the USA Joins Country in Mourning Passing of William W. Scranton

Governor Scranton chaired UNA-USA from 1977 - 1980

July 31, 2013
The United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) remembers the life of William W. Scranton and his tireless dedication to international cooperation, particularly during his service representing the United States at the UN and throughout his storied career. Scranton, who is perhaps best known for his term as governor of Pennsylvania from 1963 to 1967 and his 1964 U.S. presidential campaign, served as U.S. Ambassador to the UN from 1976 to 1977 and was the Chair of UNA-USA from 1977 to 1980.

“Governor Scranton will be fondly remembered for his leadership at the United Nations and UNA-USA,” said UNA-USA Deputy Executive Director Mary-Frances Wain. “His dedication to civil rights, education, and multilateral diplomacy speaks to the core principles of UNA-USA’s work, and his life’s work is an inspiration to our members.”

Scranton was admired by Democrats and Republicans alike for his independent thought and ability to work across partisan lines on the most pressing issues.

“William W. Scranton personified the nonpartisan, collaborative nature of UNA-USA,” said Ambassador John E. Lange, former UNA-USA Deputy Vice President, who currently serves as Senior Fellow, Global Health Diplomacy, at the United Nations Foundation. “Having had the pleasure of working for Governor Scranton, I can attest to his steadfast commitment to engaging both political parties on the importance of a strong U.S.- UN relationship. His example is one for us all to admire and to follow.”

Scranton died Sunday, July 28 in Montecito, Calif.; he was 96.
