Students from L.A. Unified School District Participate in UNA-USA's Global Classrooms Model UN ConferenceMiddle and high school participants simulate the work of the United NationsMarch 2, 2013 LOS ANGELES – More than 360 middle and high school students from the Los Angeles community are attending the United Nations Association of the USA’s Global Classrooms® Los Angeles Model UN Conference today at UCLA. In Model UN, Students role-play as representatives from countries, interest groups and nongovernmental organizations in simulations of UN bodies. Global Classrooms Model UN has amazed schools around the globe with its ability to cultivate global literacy, life skills, and attitudes necessary for active citizenship, showing that students deeply care about the world outside their local community. “Students’ participation in Model UN today marks the beginning of a long period of engagement between them and the United Nations,” said UNA-USA Executive Director Patrick Madden. “The Atlanta conference is part of a country-wide movement where students are showing they care about issues that go beyond their local communities, and are willing to bring down the common barriers that divide countries and cultures.” Students from public, private, and charter schools will role-play as ambassadors from UN member states, interest groups, and nongovernmental organizations in a simulation of the United Nations. The conference will include simulations of the following UN bodies: the UN Environment Programme; the UN Security Council; UNICEF; and the World Health Organization. Global Classrooms has been held in Los Angeles since 2003. The event will feature speakers from UNA-USA’s Southern California Division, as well as a keynote address during the Opening Ceremonies by United Nations Foundation Senior Advisor Gillian Sorensen.
