More than 700 Miami Area Students Collaborate to Solve Global Problems at Model United Nations Conference

UNA-USA’s Global Classrooms Program Aimed at Teaching Students to be Global Citizens

February 23, 2013
MIAMI – More than 700 middle and high school students from 30 schools in the Miami Dade area are attending the United Nations Association of the USA’s Global Classrooms® Miami Model UN Conference today at Miami Dade College. The conference will involve 31 schools in the Miami Dade County Public School District, as well as dozens of volunteers from area colleges.

“Students’ participation in Model UN today marks the beginning of a long period of engagement between them and the United Nations,” said UNA-USA Executive Director Patrick Madden. “The Miami conference is part of a country-wide movement where students are showing they care about issues that go beyond their local communities, and are willing to bring down the common barriers that divide countries and cultures.”

Casimiro Global Foundation President, and UNA-USA Miami Chapter Vice President Juan P. Casimiro will deliver the day’s keynote address. Topics of global interest will be debated in committees, including: women, peace, and security; dealing with an aging population; and child labor.

Global Classrooms Miami has grown rapidly since its inception in 2005 thanks to support from the public school system as well as the local community and educators.  More information on the Miami Conference can be found at www.unausa.org/gcmiamimun.

In Model UN, Students role-play as representatives from countries, interest groups and nongovernmental organizations in simulations of UN bodies. Global Classrooms Model UN has amazed schools around the globe with its ability to cultivate global literacy, life skills, and attitudes necessary for active citizenship, showing that students deeply care about the world outside their local community.
