At the Digital Gender Violence and Hate speech: The role of men, the legislator and implications for democracy side event organized by the Icelandic Parliament, Icelandic National Committee of UN Women and the Icelandic Women Rights Association, speakers shared their knowledge and experience about the effects of digital violence and hate speech on women, as well as the impactful reach of social media and how to work towards legislation to prevent digital gender violence.

Icelandic filmmaker Unnsteinn Manuel Stefánsson, whom I had the opportunity to speak with, showed clips of his documentary work Stelpur (which means girls) that allows him to engage with men and women alike regarding issues of racism and gender-inequality. “Last year, we started writing our third season of the show, and we’ve been thinking about how we can get men to partake in this discussion of gender-inequality, and I think we do it by talking about our feelings,” Stefánsson said.

Speakers at this CSW62 side event urged more people to get involved in the fight against gender-inequality.
