Honoring a MultilateralistFormer U.S. Senator George McGovern Dies at Age 90October 21, 2012 UN Photo/Eskinder DebebeFormer United States Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture George McGovern passed away on October 21, 2012 at the age of 90. Though best known for his service in the U.S. Senate and as a candidate for President of the United States, McGovern dedicated much of his life to vital issues the UN confronts every day. Throughout his career, McGovern was involved in issues related to agriculture, food, nutrition, and hunger. As the first director of the Food for Peace program in 1961, McGovern oversaw the distribution of U.S. surpluses to the needy abroad and was instrumental in the creation of the World Food Programme. McGovern was appointed the first UN Global Ambassador on World Hunger by the World Food Programme in 2001. McGovern's daughter, Susan McGovern, currently serves as a Chapter leader of the Milwaukee Chapter of UNA-USA. Click here for more on McGovern's passing. Labels: Membership |
