Despite some progress at the UN, challenges to ensuring respect for LGBT universal human rights remain, including criminalization of same-sex relationships in nearly eighty countries. Human rights advocates are working to realize and protect the rights of LGBT individuals around the world.

Marking The Day of Silence for LGBT rights in the U.S., join us for remarks and a Q&A session with Marianne Mollmann and Dr. Heather Collister. Mollmann, based in New York, will detail the international landscape of violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Dr. Collister, based in Geneva, will discuss efforts to advance LGBT rights in the context of the UN and particularly the UN Human Rights Council.

About our speakers:

Marianne Mollmann is Director of Programs at the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission in New York City. Ms. Mollmann previously was a senior policy advisor with Amnesty International's International Secretariat where she focused on freedom of expression and sexual rights issues, and a women's rights researcher and advocate with Human Rights Watch. She is the former co-coordinator of the Women's Working Group of the International Network for Economic Social and Cultural Rights and the former executive director of the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA). Ms. Mollmann holds an LL.M. in International Human Rights Law from Essex University.

Dr. Heather Collister is Program Manager (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) and Treaty Body Advocacy Coordinator for International Service for Human Rights (ISHR). Dr. Collister leads ISHR’s work in relation to LGBT rights and the protection of human rights defenders working on issues of sexual orientation and gender identity. She also coordinates much of ISHR’s work to reform and strengthen UN human rights treaty bodies and edits the monthly Human Rights Monitor.
