Dr. Ariel Pablos-MĂ©ndez is the assistant administrator for Global Health at USAID, a position he assumed in August 2011. Nominated by President Barack Obama in March 2011, Dr. Pablos-MĂ©ndez joined the USAID leadership team with a vision to shape the Bureau for Global Health's programmatic efforts to accomplish scalable, sustainable and measurable impact on the lives of people in developing countries as envisioned in the president's Global Health Initiative.
Dr. Pablos-MĂ©ndez is an experienced public health physician who most recently served as managing director at the Rockefeller Foundation where he led its global health strategy on the transformation of health systems in Africa and Asia. He first joined the Rockefeller Foundation in 1998, spearheading public-private partnerships in research and development for diseases of poverty, the foundation's strategy on AIDS care in Africa, and the Joint Learning Initiative on Human Resources for Health. He also served as director of knowledge management at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, where he established WHO's first eHealth unit.
Dr. Pablos-MĂ©ndez is a board-certified internist and until recently was practicing as a professor of clinical medicine and epidemiology at Columbia University. He has served on various boards and international commissions, and received his M.D. from the University of Guadalajara's School of Medicine and his M.P.H. from Columbia University.
Dr. Mickey Chopra took up his post as Chief of Health and Associate Director of Programmes at UNICEF’s New York Headquarters in August 2009, leading the agency’s work on maternal, newborn and child health, immunization, paediatric HIV/AIDS, and health systems strengthening, policy and research. Prior to his appointment to UNICEF, Dr. Chopra was the director of the Health Systems Research Group of the South Africa Medical Research Council.
A British national, Dr. Chopra is qualified as a medical doctor with an additional degree in medical sociology from the University of Southampton in England. After completing his internship, he went to work as a district medical officer in the rural health district of Hlabisa, South Africa. He had a particular focus on child health and nutrition programmes and received his Diploma in Child Health during this time.
After receiving his Masters in Public Health (Primary Health in Developing Countries) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1997, he joined the nascent School of Public Health at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. In 2008, he earned his PhD from Faculty of Medicine, University of Uppsala in Sweden.
