Vol 6 No 2 Summer 2008

In the Summer 2008 issue of The Interdependent, we look at the food crisis that is threatening millions of livelihoods worldwide and has caused social unrest in several developing countries. Experts weigh in on why this crisis has escalated and what to can be done to mitigate its consequences, including Marcelo Leite on the Brazilian biofuel industry and Mark Rosengrant on the cruel irony that progress in some parts of the world has played a role in causing sharp food price increases and shortages. Also in this issue, a special report on human rights as the 60-year anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights approaches. Felice Gaer profiles the departing United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, and examines what qualities are needed in her successor. Arbour talks one-on-one with Barbara Crossette about the differences among nations in prioritizing rights, and the embattled Human Rights Council. We offer highlights from UNA’s Council of Chapters and Divisions Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, where Senator Chuck Hagel was honored and more than 100 members lobbied legislators on the importance of US involvement with the UN. Finally, we introduce a regular feature by Stephen Schlesinger, author and UN expert, as he begins his book review beat with Samantha Power’s biography of Sergio Vieira de Mello, one of the UN’s most effective officials, who died tragically in the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad.
