About the City
New York City has been a beacon of hope and opportunity for generations of new Americans. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ellis Island was the landing place of millions of immigrants from around the world. Over the years, migration has made the New York City metropolitan area a window to the world. Today, New York City is defined by its diverse citizenry and its cosmopolitan lifestyle. The majority of New York City’s over eight million inhabitants are of Hispanic, black/African-American and Asian descent, making the city one of the most culturally rich and ethnically diverse urban societies in America. As you ride the subway or walk down the street, it is not unusual to hear conversations carried on in English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian or Italian. According to the New York State Controller, there are over 138 languages spoken in the borough of Queens alone. In this diverse urban environment, Global Classrooms® teaches essential skills in global literacy and leadership. Proficiency in communication and conflict-resolution serves New York City public school students not only in the classroom, but in their communities as well.
