Global Classrooms: New Delhi

About Global Classrooms: New Delhi

Over the past five years, the New Delhi Global Classrooms program has grown to encompass schools from every state in India and beyond. A consortium of 114 schools across India and 13 schools outside of India, is dedicated to "preparing global citizens and agents of social change committed to humanistic values and democratic traditions." With Global Classrooms: New Delhi’s premier partner, DPS R.K. Puram, the program has reached approximately 90% of all DPS students. 125 schools participated in their 5th Global Classrooms Model UN Conference last year, with students from every state of India as well as Kuwait, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and the UK in attendence. In addition, conference opening ceremonies included an opportunity to engage with former president of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Talks with India's Ministry of Education are underway to determine if Global Classrooms can be instituted at the National level.

About Delhi Public Schools, RK PuramDelhi Public Schools, RK Puram was founded as a private institution in New Delhi in 1972 by the Delhi Public School Society (DPS). DPS is currently made up of 63 schools throughout India and six schools in Dubai, Indonesia, Kuwait, Nepal, Qatar and Sharjah. DPS, RK Puram is a co-educational day-cum-boarding school with approximately 9,500 students studying at three campuses: RK Puram, East of Kailash and Vasant Vihar.

The goal of the school is to enroll students with a love of learning and instill in them a desire to excel at every level. The school's mission is "to open doors and open minds". DPS, RK Puram equips students with the intellectual and practical skills necessary for their success as the future of the nation.

In addition to the school's commitment to academic excellence and education for all-round development, DPS, RK Puram is characterized by its appreciation of the worth of the individual student. DPS RK Puram is equally committed to under-represented and less-privileged students such as gifted applicants whose parents did not attend school, and children with high potential in difficult financial circumstances.

A landmark development has been the inclusion of the physically and mentally handicapped children from the Tamana Special School into mainstream school life. This contributes to a strong sense of community that is characteristic of DPS, RK Puram.

Children belonging to every strata of society are given the opportunity to study at the School, which does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, caste or creed in its admissions policy.

All the academic programs and activities at DPS, RK Puram are designed to help students develop lives of significance for themselves and for others, and to remain true to the spirit of the school motto: "Service Before Self."

About the City
The capital of India is the site of a remarkable fusion of the past and present. Ruins and ancient landmarks stand amidst modern buildings and giant skyscrapers. Older parts of Delhi show the influence of the Muslim rulers of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries with mosques monuments and exceptional landscaping.

New Delhi, on the other hand, was built by the British as the capital of India in 1911, and has a grandiose imperial style, with spacious, tree-lined avenues and imposing government buildings.

Despite its long history, New Delhi is officially very young. At partition in 1947, Delhi changed radically almost overnight. With the creation of a predominately Hindu India and an exclusively Muslim Pakistan, the Indian sub-continent witnessed a mass migration of peoples to both countries. The previously Muslim city of Delhi became a Punjabi-speaking city of Hindus and Sikhs. Heavy migration from various parts of the country doubled New Dehli's population and brought together a diversity of cultures.

Since independence, New Delhi has prospered as the capital of India. In the past decade its population has increased by 50 percent, largely due to rapid economic expansion and an increased number of job opportunities. New Delhi - one of the most affluent urban centers in India - is a city rich with culture, architecture and human diversity, steeped in history and home to almost 14 million inhabitants.
