Global Classrooms: Cantabria UNA-USA would like to congratulate Global Classrooms: Cantabria and Fundación Marcelino Botín on organizing a successful 2010 Model UN Conference! Please check back soon for information regarding future conferences.
The Global Classrooms Cantabria program works through ten Spanish secondary schools in the region of Cantabria; these include five “veteran” schools that participated in the program in 2009 as well as five schools that began the program this year. Each of these schools has a Spanish-English bilingual program, in which certain academic classes are given in English (science, math, physical education, etc.), that typically includes an extra session of English classes in the afternoon. Each school has the assistance of a Fulbright Scholar that helps in facilitating and implementing the program. Global Classrooms students, who are largely between the ages of 13 and 15, worked from September to February to prepare for their Model UN conference, in which they served as delegates of 84 countries around the world while working to find solutions to the global issues of malnutrition, access to primary education, and access to freshwater resources.
Preparation for the conference included learning about UN structure and protocol, researching country background and policy information, attending guest lectures sponsored by the Fundación Marcelino Botín, and practicing public speaking/debate techniques. Each delegation was required to write a position paper detailing the stance and recommendations of their country relative to the debate topic, as well as to prepare a speech to be given at the conference.
