| About the City | Global Clasrooms: Berlin
Berlin, the capital of Germany, is dynamic, cosmopolitan and creative. It allows for every kind of lifestyle. East meets West in this metropolis, which sits in the heart of a changing Europe. Germany's largest city is an exciting place; there are opportunities in all areas, including entertainment, recreation, economics, science and academia.
Berlin has more than 170 museums, offering everything from the ancient to the ultra-modern. A quick tour of the art scene might include the Egyptian Nefertiti, the Greek Pergamon Altar, the painters of the "Brücke" and the "Bauhaus," and works by Baselitz and Beuys. The works found in the city's museums and private galleries are as exciting as they are diverse.
Berlin's vibrant cultural scene has a lot to offer. No matter what your preference is, you're guaranteed to find something that suits your taste. Thanks to a modern and customer-friendly public transport system, you can travel with ease. One ticket allows passage on all trains, trams, busses and ferries. They run often, and even during most of the night.
Berlin is a capital with a turbulent past and a promising future. The Berlin Wall separated the political, cultural and economic East and West for 28 years. On October 3, 1990, Berlin finally saw this separation come to an end. Today, Berlin is once again the capital of Germany. The city has risen to the urban and environmental challenges of rebuilding itself. (Building Bridges, Metro Design, Embassies and Residences for the new Capital have turned Berlin into Europe's largest building site.)
