Council of Organizations
UNA-USA's Council of Organizations offers unique opportunities for leaders from more than 100 nongovernmental organizations to partner with the United Nations and each other. Groups with interests in education, religion, labor, sustainable development, human rights, health and women's issues work together to encourage strong US leadership in the United Nations and play a critical role in educating millions of Americans about the UN's importance in world affairs.
Council of Organizations members include the League of Women Voters, AARP, Unitarian Universalist Association, National Association of Social Workers, Rotary International, Lions Club International, Volunteers of America, National Council of Negro Women, B'nai B'rith International and the National Wildlife Federation.
The goals of the Council of Organizations are:
-
Educate: To provide information about the UN to Council members in order to inform their respective stakeholders throughout the United States about the UN;
-
Build Community: To allow organizations to network amongst themselves and create synergies;
-
Mobilize: To promote UN policies, effective US policies on the UN, and US compliance with its international commitments, as members deem appropriate - in DC, NY and at the local level;
-
Engage: and to participate in UN activities.
The Council of Organizations sponsors monthly briefings in New York and Washington, D.C., featuring UN ambassadors, academics, US government officials, distinguished NGO leaders and top Secretariat officials.
UNA works with members of the Council to support an effective United Nations and educate their members about the UN system by providing guidance on UN issues, conducting shared community work, monitoring UN-related legislation in Congress, participating in conventions of member organizations, contributing articles to members' newsletters, and more.
