Join UNA Connecticut for the 48th Annual jUNe Day

Saturday, June 29, 2013
The 48th annual jUNe Day will take place on Saturday, June 29 in Westport. The United Nations Association (UNA) of Southwestern Connecticut and the Town of Westport will host over 300 guests from the United Nations community in New York.

The opening ceremonies take place at Saugatuck Elementary School on Riverside Avenue at 10:15 a.m.  United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs Patricia O’Brien will offer brief remarks along with UN Under-Secretary General Joseph Verner Reed.  Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff and UNA President Bill Hass will welcome the guests, and jUNe Day Chairperson Michaela Maccoll will outline the Day’s activities.    The public is encouraged to join the opening ceremonies and welcome our international guests.

In 1965, the annual jUNe Day celebration was established  by the late Ruth Steinkraus Cohen, the founder of the UN Association of Southwestern Connecticut and International Visitors Committee of Connecticut, in observance of the signing of the UN charter on June 26th, 1945.  The Day’s main purpose is to promote world peace and international understanding through friendly interaction between UN visitors and their hosts.   On the 29th, the flags of many of the 193 member countries of the United Nations will fly on the Westport Post Road bridge named in her honor.

Ms. O’Brien, this year’s UN guest of honor, has extensive experience in legal and international affairs.  As Legal Adviser to the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland since 2003, she has advised on legal issues arising in Irish foreign policy, in particular public international law, human rights law and EU law.  She previously served as a Senior Legal Adviser to the Irish Attorney General and as Legal Counsellor at the Irish Permanent Representation to the European Union, in Brussels.  She has advised the Government of Ireland in legal proceedings before the International Court of Justice, the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice. She has also participated in expert legal meetings in the UN, the Council of Europe and the EU.

United Nations staff and representatives from Governments around the world and their families will then participate in a variety of sporting and recreational events. There will be a soccer match between the UN team and the Westport Knights, a tennis tournament and a day of golf at the Longshore Golf Course. Special tours of Earthplace, a nature center, and the historic town of Westport will be offered free of charge. Also, a special visit has been arranged to the Westport Town Farm for a chance to see a working farm. Guests will also have free access to the Compo Beach and the town pools on the seaside at Longshore Park.

Area residents are welcome to assist in set-up, food-preparation and decorations, and photographers are needed at all venues.  Volunteers are also needed to serve both breakfast and lunch, “tour guides” will ride along in busses to point out interesting sites, and hospitality volunteers are needed at Longshore.  For those who like to pitch in behind the scenes, a clean up crew is also needed.

All food and refreshments for the day have been provided by local businesses and the UN Association of Southwestern Connecticut.
