Sunday, January 26, 2014
Girl Rising is a powerful and innovative new feature film that spotlights the stories of girls born into unforgiving circumstances. Girls like Sokha who rises from a life scouring a garbage dump in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to become a star student and an accomplished dancer; Suma who writes songs to help her endure forced servitude in Nepal and Ruksana, a girl who's family lives on the pavement in India.

Sunday, January 26th, 11:30AM

The Moviehouse, Millerton, NY

Each girl is paired with a renowned writer from her own country. Each of these stories are narrated by a celebrated actress including Cate Blanchett, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Meryl Streep and Kerry Washington. Liam Neeson provides additional narration between each segment.

Girl Rising is also a grassroots global action campaign for girls' education, powered by girls, women, boys and men around the world who stand for equality.

The senior producer of Girl Rising is Kayce Jennings. She will introduce the film and then discuss the production and the movement it has inspired.

Before co-founding The Documentary Group, Kayce was a producer at ABC News for 20 years, covering international and national news events for virtually every news division broadcast, and was on the staffs of Nightline, World News Tonight and 20/20.

This event is free and open to the public. The Salisbury Forum is the primary sponsor and the UNA of Connecticut offers some small financial support.
