Night of 1,000 Dinners: A Celebration of International Women's DayIowa DivisionThursday, March 7, 2013 Location: Iowa City, Iowa Come celebrate International Women's Day with Iowa City and the United Nations! Iowa UNA will be hosting the eleventh annual Night of 1,000 Dinners. An international dinner will be served encompassing ethnic food from around the globe. There will also be live international music, a silent auction in support of the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women and Girls, and a keynote address from Meenakshi Gigi Durham. Part of the night's proceeds will also go to the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women and Girls. This campaign is housed by UN Women which aids women and girls across the planet to live better lives free of discrimination and sexual violence. To date, the UN Trust Fund has delivered more than USD 86 million to 351 initiatives in 128 countries and territories. Keynote speaker Professor Meenakshi Gigi Durham holds a joint appointment in the Department of Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies at the University of Iowa. Her work centers on media and the politics of the body, with an emphasis on gender, sexuality, race, and youth cultures. Her essay, "Grieving," published in the Harvard Review in 2010, has been selected for inclusion in the 2011 Best American Essays anthology. Her professional journalism experience encompasses various newspapers and magazines including The Pensacola News-Journal, The Times of India, and Science Today.
