UNA-USA asks President Obama to Support Arrest Warrants and Ensure Civilian Protection
UNA-USA joined 65 other human rights organizations in signing a letter to President Obama in response to the new arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, issued by the International Criminal Court. The letter welcomes the warrant and calls on President Obama to clearly state that acts threatening civilians, Sudanese human rights activists, aid workers or peacekeepers in Darfur will not be tolerated.

Highlighting the troubling post-election rise in violence in Darfur, the letter calls for a reaffirmation by the Obama Administration of its support for previous warrants and intensified American diplomatic efforts to secure a Darfur peace agreement and implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the North and the South.

Help Reduce the World's Worst Weapons: Senate Poised to Act on Historic Nuclear Arms Pact!
Late last year, the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START I) expired, leaving no verifiable nuclear arms control agreement in effect between the world's two largest nuclear powers, the United States and Russia.

Now, the Senate is on the verge of taking up a new and stronger U.S.-Russian nuclear disarmament agreement, the New START Treaty. If ratified, the treaty will reduce deployed U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons by about a third, to the lowest level in more than half a century.

The New START Treaty will bring us one step closer to a world free of nuclear weapons.

But first, we need to ratify it.

This will require the support of two-thirds of the Senate - no easy task, especially in an election year.

Opposition groups are already mobilizing to defeat the treaty. We need your help.

Senate action is pending, and you can make a difference!

ACT NOW -- Tell your Senators to support the New START Treaty.

Take Action: Support the ICC on International Justice Day
July 17 is International Justice Day. It celebrates the International Criminal Court (ICC) and all efforts to end impunity for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. It is also time to celebrate our achievements.

Last year on July 17 and since then we asked you to write to President Obama urging his administration to participate in ICC meetings, including the recent Review Conference in Kampala, Uganda. You sent over 4,800 advocacy messages on the ICC to the administration and Congress. They heard you. After eight years of absence, the U.S. is now an active participant in the Court.

Successful U.S. engagement with the ICC is a major achievement, but it is not enough. The Obama administration has made a good start in renewing the U.S. commitment to the ICC. It has pledged its cooperation with the Court. But the U.S. needs a comprehensive ICC policy which administration officials now say is "too hard" to reach. This will leave the U.S. without a foundation for its work with the Court and unprepared to deal with unforeseen situations and emergencies. The Obama administration early on committed to completing an interagency policy toward the ICC.

Tell President Obama that this International Justice Day is the time to finish what he started: complete an integrated U.S. policy toward the ICC.

Celebrate International Justice Day 2010
Each year on July 17th, communities and countries around the world acknowledge the critical importance of the International Criminal Court in the evolving system of international justice. The ICC is an institution committed to ending impunity for the world’s most terrible atrocities and deterring perpetrators of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. This year there is much to celebrate, largely because of the overwhelming successes we’ve shared in our advocacy. International Justice Day 2010 marks more than a year of new progress between the United States government and the ICC, particularly in the growing movement for US participation in the ICC. Starting in July 2009, the US ended an eight-year absence from meetings of the Court by attending both the Assembly of States Parties meetings and the Review Conference of the ICC in Kampala, Uganda. A week before the conference, President Obama endorsed the ICC in his National Security Strategy. At the Review Conference, the US made many statements in support of the role of the ICC, and the member states of the ICC issued a declaration that officially recognized July 17th as “Day for International Criminal Justice.”
