BACKGROUND The United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) and the UN Foundation are planning the establishment of a new alliance. Under the alliance the management of UNA-USA programs will be transferred to the UN Foundation, under the leadership of an Executive Director. Final approval of the alliance is virtually certain to be obtained in the next several months. In anticipation of this, the UN Foundation is initiating recruitment of the new Executive Director. OVERVIEW The Executive Director of the United Nations Association of the USA is responsible for the management and development of UNA-USA, UNA-USA membership (including chapters), the Business Council for the UN, the Council of Organizations, UNA-USA policy, communications, and advocacy support for the membership, and the UNA-USA Global Classrooms program. The Executive Director is also responsible for the close coordination of UNA-USA with other programs, initiatives and activities of the United Nations Foundation, particularly the Better World Campaign. Reporting Relationships/Scope The Executive Director, UNA-USA reports to the Vice President, Public Policy and Public Affairs.
Responsibilities/Deliverables - Craft and implement strategies to strengthen existing UNA-USA chapters and to develop new chapters through the application of the latest techniques associated with the management and growth of chapter-based organizations.
- Develop a strong understanding of the complex issues in the relationship between the U.S. and the UN and develop close relationships with senior officials in the U.S. government dealing with UN issues as well as at the UN.
- Coordinate the work of UNA-USA with other programs and activities of the United Nations Foundation and the Better World Fund and serve as a team player with other UNF/BWF teams, including Public Affairs, Development and Partnerships, to further the development of UNA-USA.
- Serve as the UNA-USA contact with UNF principals, UNF senior staff and long-time supporters of UNA-USA and ensure open channels of communication with UNA-USA members and leadership.
- Travel to chapters around the country for public speaking and to discuss chapter-management issues and the US-UN relationship, and facilitate the travel of other UNA-USA staff and outside speakers to chapters.
- Craft opportunities for UNA-USA chapters and members to participate in other UNF programs and initiatives.
- In close consultation with UNA-USA chapter members and leaders, the Council of Chapter and Divisions and the Better World Campaign, develop and implement a UNA-USA legislative, policy and advocacy agenda.
- Oversee management of UNA-USA web presence and production of communications materials (newsletters, advocacy brochures, letters, fact sheets, publications such as the annual Global Agenda: Issues before the UN) for UNA-USA members and, as appropriate, broader audiences.
- In close collaboration with UNF development and partnerships teams, ensure that UNA-USA chapters receive up-to-date toolkits and support related (a) to raising funds, recruiting members, and organizing events and (b) concrete opportunities to engage in advocacy.
- Play a leadership role in working with UNA chapters and the Council of Chapters and Divisions in organizing effective annual meetings.
- Manage the budget and financial affairs of UNA-USA, in conjunction with the Vice President, Public Policy and Public Affairs and the UN Foundation financial and development staff. Work closely with Executive Director, NY Office.
- Supervise professional and administrative staff associated with UNA-USA.
- Other duties as assigned.
Selection Criteria - Minimum 15 years experience in leadership of a chapter-based, membership organization - required. Demonstrated commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations – required.
- Substantial experience in international affairs preferred, especially in multilateral organizations.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, strong leadership and management skills and experience, and ability to interact credibly with chapter members and leadership – required.
- Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred.
Compensation and Benefits Salary commensurate with experience. Actual salary will depend on qualifications and anticipated contribution to the Foundation.
UNF pays 100% of medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance premiums for its employees and 75% of medical and vision for employees' dependents.
