Background
UNA-USA partners with more than one dozen US-based organizations to fight global poverty; One.Org backed by Bono and other celebrities.
UNA-USA, the nation’s largest grassroots foreign policy organization, today officially joined The One Campaign, a national education and advocacy effort to rally Americans to fight global crises like AIDS, hunger and poverty. UNA-USA becomes the newest of The One Campaign’s partners, which include some of the most respected US-based humanitarian organizations. World Vision, Bread for the World, Oxfam America, Save the Children, DATA, CARE USA and the United Nations Millennium Campaign are already members.
This new partnership strengthens UNA-USA’s ongoing efforts to educate the American public about the importance of international cooperation and the role of the United Nations. According to UNA-USA’s President William H. Luers, “Our organization is dedicated to educating Americans about the most pressing social and economic crises facing the world today. As we work to push for American understanding and support for the Millennium Development Goals, The One Campaign unites us with important partners and provides opportunities for grassroots action focused on improving the human condition globally.”
The One Campaign takes its name from its priority to push for the US government to earmark an additional one percent of the federal budget to be dedicated to the needs of the world’s poorest, including education, hunger, poverty, clean water, children’s health and AIDS treatment and prevention. Bono—the lead singer of the rock band U2—and a co-founder of The One Campaign, is one of many celebrities that have become supporters of this national effort. Appearing in a recent “One.Org” Public Service Announcement, which aired on MTV and ABC Networks, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Cameron Diaz, Al Pacino, Alfre Woodward, George Clooney and more added their voice to the battle to end extreme poverty as part of The One Campaign.
UNA-USA will partner with The One Campaign to develop projects and communications campaigns that UNA-USA members, student activists and other grassroots leaders can participate in. As an official member of The One Campaign, UNA-USA will contribute to the nationwide call for every American to do what they can to “Make Poverty History.”
How You Can Make a Difference...
1. Volunteer with UNA-USA's Humanitarian Campaigns
The goals of the One Campaign are in keeping with the missions of UNA-USA’s two humanitarian campaigns, HERO and Adopt-A-Minefield. Both campaigns address Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) such as child health and survival, education, poverty and hunger reduction, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
HERO
HERO (Help Educate at-Risk Orphans and vulnerable children) raises awareness and funds to support the education and basic needs of children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.
AAM
AAM (Adopt-A-Minefield) saves lives, puts land back into productive use, and revives economies by clearing landmines and assisting survivors around the world.
Supporting The One Campaign is an additional way for Americans to take action and support the goals of both HERO and AAM.
2. Sign the One Declaration
We invite you to take a moment to sign the One Declaration to "Make Poverty History".
